The “G” in Downtown Bryan’s Mr. G’s Pizza is actually the first name initial of the establishment’s proprietor, Giovanni Cerone, a pioneer in the redevelopment of Downtown Bryan and an amazing pizza chef. It could, however, stand for “Great Pizza” and not be considered braggin’, ’cause it’s true!
My first experience with Mr. G’s wat the Meathead Pizza, a carnivoire’s delight piled high with pepperoni, sausage, ham and hamburger. I learned that Mr. G doesn’t skimp on the toppings, especially on the Meathead. It took both hands to carry the thing to the car.
On my next visit, I tried the White Pizza, which the menu proclaims is “A favorite of Mr G himself!” The pie is basically their original pizza without the red sauce and sprinkled with basil. It was good stuff! The crust was fluffy and thin at the same time, stone oven perfect!
I also picked up a pepperoni pie. You gotta try “the standard” to do a serious review of any pizza joint. Mr. G’s pepperoni pizza did not disappoint. The sauce, cheesa and pepperoni were perfectly proportioned. There was pepperoni in nearly every bite, but it wasn’t totally covered and wasn’t greasy at all.
The most recent visit to Mr. G’s involved the famous Original Calzone, stuffed with mozzarella and ricotta cheese and pepperoni. The thing was HUGE, big enough for at least three people to share. The menu does state as an intro to the Calzones section, “Please do not ask to mix or change ingredients in the Calzone.” I was fine with it the way it was, perfect! The cheeses and meat were in optimal balance and the pepperoni was present but not overpowering and, again, not greasy in the least.
If you’re looking for a place to grab a great pizza pie while supporting a local business and the local economy, look no further than Mr. G’s in Downtown Bryan. Call ahead for to-go orders or enjoy a leisurely Italian meal in the large dining room at their historic location.
